         Die German Antarctic Receiving Station (GARS) O’Higgins ist eine ganzjährig betriebene, deutsche Forschungsstation in der Antarktis. Sie befindet sich auf der Antarktischen Halbinsel am Kap Legoupil. Wichtigstes wissenschaftliches Instrument der Station ist eine 9-Meter-Antenne, die sowohl für den Empfang von Satellitendaten, die Kommandierung und Bahnverfolgung von Satelliten als auch als Radioteleskop verwendet wird. Das Antennensystem ist ausgelegt für den Datenempfang im S- und X-Band sowie das Senden im S-Band. Bei der 9-Meter-Antenne handelt es sich um eine weltweit einmalige Spezialanfertigung, die auch bei hohen Windlasten die Kommunikation mit polar umlaufenden Satelliten sowie radioastronomische Beobachtungen ohne die signaldämpfenden Eigenschaften eines Radoms ermöglicht. Zusammen mit Inuvik in Kanada sichert die O’Higgins Station die bipolare Kontaktlösung zu Satelliten. Zudem wird die Station für Nahe-Echtzeit Anwendungen der maritimen Dienste eingesetzt. Komplettiert wird die 9-Meter-Antenne durch eine Forschungs- und eine Versorgungsstation, ein Tanklager sowie zwei VSAT-Kommunikationsantennen, die eine redundante WAN-Anbindung über verschiedene geostationäre Satelliten sicherstellen. Die Funktionalität der Station wird erweitert durch einen kryogenen Dualband-Empfänger für VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry), zwei Wasserstoff-Maser als hochgenaue Frequenznormale, zwei GNSS Referenzstationen, zwei Corner-Reflektoren und eine Wetterstation mit unterschiedlich positionierten Windsensoren.

         Der Satellitenbetrieb erfolgt weitgehend automatisiert, jedoch ist zum Betrieb der Infrastruktur und zur Sicherung der hohen Verfügbarkeit der Station immer eine Gruppe vor Ort notwendig.

         Aufgrund der besonderen Lage sowie der schwierigen Logistik, die in solchen weltabgeschiedenen Orten existieren, muss diese Station autark betrieben werden.
